Halsey has been around for a while now, but it wasn’t until a couple months ago that I really started listening to her. Halsey has become the person that I listen to when I’m in a bad mood, to help lift my spirits. I listen to her music when I need to be reminded of who I am and what I deserve in life. Her songs in her album ‘Manic’ covers some heavy stuff, like being cheated on, lied to, being gay, the life of being with boys, and discovering who you are as a person. Those are the reasons why I listen to her music. I listen to Halsey’s songs because they’re so powerful, and I am able to relate to them.

‘You should be sad’ is a song about a girl going through a breakup with her boyfriend. She sings “you’re not half the man you think and you are, And you can’t fill the hole inside of you with money, drugs and cars,”. She’s realizing the type of man she was with, how much trouble and pain he brought her, and how she doesn’t need that in her life anymore. She also sings “Won’t see your alligator tears, ’Cause, no, I’ve had enough of them,”. The saying ‘Alligator tears’ is an idiom that means someone is showing false emotion, such as pain or sympathy. She’s saying that her ex boyfriend didn’t show true emotion in their relationship. She maybe even felt that it was all fake, and that can really make a person hurt. Halsey is realizing that she deserves better than all that.

The reason I relate with this song so much, ‘You should be sad’, is because I’ve been through the same things that Halsey sings about. I was in a relationship filled with cheating, and lies. Tons of alligator tears, and pain. Now that I am no longer in that relationship, I’m realizing that I didn’t deserve all of those things that I went through. This song reminds me of the pain, but in a good way. It reminds me of how far I have come, how much I have changed, and how to remain strong. That’s why I listen to this song whenever I want to be in a better mood. It makes me jump around and sing at the top of my lungs.

No one deserves to be with someone who causes them pain, no matter how much they’ll say they love you. If you’re not happy, don’t keep yourself in the relationship for the sake of the other person. You deserve happiness. The only upside of being in a hurting relationship is that when you’ve left it, you learn a lot about yourself, the other person, and what you really want and deserve.
